Besonders bekannt ist er für das Königliche Opernhaus.
Der Markt selber heißt Covent Garden Piazza, wird aber oft genug Market genannt. Ich bin ebenfalls diesem Irrtum aufgesessen, weshalb ich in meinem vorherigen Blog den Covent Garden Piazza gemeint habe.

Hier ist schon in der römischen Zeit von Londiniums ein Siedlungskern gewesen. Den Namen erhielt der Landkreis allerdings erst unter König John Lackland zwischen 1199 und 1256.
In dem Landkreis unterhielt im Mittelalter der Konvent von Sankt Peter in Wesminster einen Garten, weshalb die Namensgebung nahe liegt.
Später wurde er sogar eine wichtige Quelle für Obst und Gemüse für ganz London.

Das heutige Aussehen des Covent Garden geht darauf zurück, dass Francis Russell Inigo Jones beauftragte ein elegantes Wohngebiet im Stil der großen italienischen Piazzas zu entwickeln.
Hierauf beruht der Entwurf des Piazzas im Zentrum von Covent Garden Market. Durch die Veränderung wurde das Viertel schnell zum größten und wichtigsten Market des Landes und schaffte es sich sogar gegen die etablierte Konkurrenz im Osten Londons durch zu setzen.
Allerdings wurden erst 1830 Hallen errichtet, welche witterungsunabhängigen Marktbetrieb ermöglichten.

Mittlerweile wurde der Markt (unter anderem Aufgrund von Lieferengpässen durch verstopfte Straßen) an die Stelle des New Covent Garden Market verlegt. Seitdem dient der ursprüngliche Markt als Touristenattraktion, wie auch das naheliegende London Transport Museum.
