Wie der Klappentext verrät ist der Autor in den späten 40er und 50er Jahren zuerst Mathematikdozent und später dann Professor für Astronomie und Experimenteller Philosophie.
Dies spiegelt sich auch in dem Buch wieder. Seine Beschreibungen strotzen vor technischen Ausführungen, wie etwas funktionieren könnte. So kommt man sich manchmal dabei vor, als würde man eine nahe Zukunft mit den Augen der 60er und 70er Jahre betrachten. Es fliegen raketengetriebene Helikopter-Taxis durch die Gegend und eine unzählige Menge an Raumschiffen startet von England aus.
Man könnte diesen Blick ungefähr damit vergleichen, wie die Serie Star Trek anfangs gesehen wurde.

Im Buch selber geht es um einen jungen Wissenschaftler, der die Rückkehr eines Raumschiffes von Ursa Major erlebt. In diesem sind nicht etwa die erwarteten Astronauten enthalten, sondern ein leeres Schiff, dessen Lochcomputerspeicher gelöscht wurde. Einzig und allein wurde eine Warnung in das Metall eingekratzt.
Aus diesem Grund bereitet sich die vereinte Raumflotte der Erde auf den Ernstfall vor, welcher dann auch unmittelbar in Form von einer fremden Flotte eintrifft.
Zuerst scheint es so, das die Erde unterlegen sei, bis eine dritte Flotte auf den Plan tritt und sich das Blatt zu wenden scheint.

Fazit

Wer Spaß daran hat, die Welt aus Mitte des letzten Jahrhunderts zu erleben, dem kann man das Buch empfehlen.
Allerdings sind die technischen Beschreibungen nach heutigem, wissenschaftlichen Kenntnisstand eher in den Bereich der Sagen zu verordnen. Aber das war das Holo-Deck ja auch sehr lange.
