https://satishu.de/the-british-museum/ Tue, 11 Nov 2014 18:00:10 +0000 https://satishu.de/?p=556 Im Jahr 1753 wurde vom Arzt und Wissenschaftler Hans Sloane eine umfangreiche Sammlung an Literatur dem britischen Staat übereignet.
Das damalige Parlament beschloss darauf, diese Sammlung als The British Museum zu erhalten und zu pflegen.
Zuerst wurde die Sammlung 1759 in einem Herrenhaus im Stadtteil Bloomsbury in London ausgestellt.
Bereits 1824 war die Sammlung derartig angewachsen, das beschlossen wurde sie in ein neu zu errichtendes Gebäude um zu ziehen. Dies war 1850 abgeschlossen. Das Gebäude wurde seit dem nicht mehr gewechselt.
Dennoch mussten Teile der Sammlung in andere Gebäude ausgelagert werden, da diese weiter anwuchs.

Das Gebäude selber wurde von Robert Smirke entworfen und war ursprünglich quadratisch mit einem Innenhof.
Der Innenhof war ursprünglich nicht überdacht gewesen. Erst im Jahr 2000 war die Stahl-Glas-Konstruktion der Kuppel fertig gestellt worden. Seit dem bildet der Innenhof einen imposanten, weiteren Raum des Museums. Das Gebäude innerhalb des Hofes war ursprünglich der Lesesaal der British Library.
Mit der Überdachung bildet der Innenhof den größten, überdachten, öffentlichen Raum in Europa.

Die Sammlung des Museums umfasst heute etwa 8 Millionen Objekte vom Anfang der Menschheit bis zum heutigen Tage.
Besondere Objekte sind unter anderem der Rosetta Stone, welchen man auch als Replik zum Anfassen ausgestellt hat, als auch diverse ägyptische Mumien.

In der Bibliothek des Museums stehen heute etwa 350.000 Bände, welche auch Teil der British Library sind. Im Lesesaal selber stehen etwa 25.000 Bände ausgestellt.
